Marianna is in Mrs. Easton's class and she absolutely LOVES to write. In a recent interview with Marianna she revealed that she discovered her love of writing when she was in the 1st grade. Her teacher gave her a topic to take home. Marianna's parents helped her with the assignment by giving her ideas. Marianna enjoyed working with her parents and realized that she also enjoyed writing. What she loves most about writing is that it gives her an opportunity to express herself in different ways. This school year she had a chance to write a realistic fiction story about two cousins babysitting their little cousin. She was inspired by her own experience as a babysitter. Marianna said she took some of the events from her experience and retold the story. Please be sure to read Marianna's "The Baby Problem" at the end of this article.

Marianna's advice to writers in grades Pre-K to 2 is try writing on your own. If it doesn't work out, try working with someone else.

Marianna plans to create more masterpieces over the summer. Her work is likely to be inspired by the adventures she and her cousin will experience together in Greece.

The Baby Problem
by Marianna

Once there were two cousins, Jenny and Riyanne. They did not see each other that often. One evening their aunt and uncle called them and asked them if they could come and babysit Daphne. They didn't really want to babysit Daphne but when they heard they would be working together and get paid five dollars an hour, they immediately said "Yes".

Their aunt kissed Daphne and the girls and told them a bunch of instructions. Finally they left. The list that their auntie left was on the refrigerator. It said to feed Daphne. Jenny went into the kitchen and Riyanne stayed with Daphne to entertain her. Daphne started crying because Riyanne was making faces.

Jenny came running with a little glass of milk. They tried to feed her but the glass was too small. After a few minutes Jenny came back with a bigger glass and they tried to feed her again. But she wouldn't drink it. They thought that the milk was too cold.

Jenny told Riyanne to come and help her in the kitchen. Finally they found Daphne's bottle and poured the milk in it. Jenny gave it to Daphne but she was too young to hold it so she spilled it on herself. Riyanne poured more milk. Jenny picked her up and fed her. The girls were happy until Riyanne started to cry again.

Riyanne went to look at the list. Unfortunately there was nothing written about her crying! Jenny had already figured out the trick. They simply had to burp her. Daphne was getting sleepy. "Do you smell something bad?" whispered Jenny. They realized they had to change Daphne's diaper.

Jenny went to the bathroom and got gloves, tissues, towels and clips for their noses. Riyanne got the list and one garbage bag and put it next to Daphne. Jenny took off Daphne's P.J.s and then they put on the nose clips and gloves. Then they opened the garbage bag and put the dirty diaper in it. But still she could not get rid of the smell, so she threw it out the window!

Jenny filled the bathtub with warm water and they slowly put Daphne in the tub. She was smiling and laughing. She started to throw water all over the place. Jenny added some blue bubble bath and Riyanne added some red. The water turned from blue to red and red to purple. Daphne liked all the colors and loved the bubbles.

Finally after she was clean and smelling like a rose, they put on a clean diaper and put on her pajamas. Then they put Daphne in her crib together with her favorite toy, a musical octopus.

The baby clapped her hands and looked at the girls. Jenny and Riyanne picked three books they liked from the bookcase and read them out loud to Daphne. They started with Little Red Riding Hood. It was not her favorite. Next they read The Three Little Pigs. Daphne kind of liked it but her favorite was Goldilocks.

Daphne fell asleep during Goldilocks. In a couple of minutes Jenny and Riyanne also fell asleep. Late that night Daphne's parents came home and they let Jenny and Riyanne sleep over!

And that he did. Tamim wound up with the singing and speaking role of "String Bean," a character who gives Pinocchio advice. Tamim's advice to kids transitioning from G4 to G5 is "[When it comes time to audition for next year's play], give it a try. You'll look back on the experience as a good one. Go for it!"
